2019 Unisys Security Index

The Unisys Security Index measures concerns of consumers on issues related to national, personal, financial and Internet security around the world.

We surveyed eight security threats in 13 countries: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Germany, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, U.K. and U.S.

Global security concern has increased to the highest level in 13 years of the Unisys Security Index. The 2019 Unisys Security Index stands at 175 (out of 300) globally, a two-point increase since 2018.

Highlights from the Unisys Security Index survey in Malaysia include:

  • Malaysia’s Unisys Security Index is 211 out of 300, down four points since 2018. This is the largest decrease seen among the 13 countries included in the survey.
  • Data security is a central concern for Malaysians. The top three concerns in Malaysia are data security related: nearly nine in 10 (88%) are seriously (extremely/very) concerned about unauthorised access to or misuse of their personal information, 87% are seriously concerned about other people obtaining or using their credit or debit card details, and 78% are concerned about hacking or viruses.
  • For many Malaysians, these concerns are based on experience. Almost half (47%) have suffered, or know someone who has suffered, a data breach in the last year. The most common of these are social engineering scams (19%) and the hijacking of social media accounts (15%).
  • In contrast, concern about physical safety has dropped significantly over the last year with 62% of Malaysians concerned about their personal safety – down from 70% in 2018.
  • When it comes to attending large-scale public events such as the World Cup or a music festival, Malaysians are more fearful of having credit card (82% seriously concerned) or personal data (79% seriously concerned) stolen on public Wi-Fi than they are of being harmed in a physical attack (75% seriously concerned).
